Aliera e'Kieron

From the Lyorn Records of the Dragaeran Empire

Aliera e'Kieron is the daughter of Adron e'Kieron and Verra, a notable swordfighter and sorcerer, and wielder of the Great Weapon Pathfinder.

Aliera is very short for a Dragaeran, and used to levitate rather than walking in order to hide this. While she has been seen walking normally of late, she has apparently not completely abandoned this practice.

She is extremely beautiful, has eyes that are "either blue or green", and is determined to have her own way at all times, usually without regard to the cost to herself or others. She is unusually touchy, even for a Dragonlord, however, she is loyal to friends, and secretly holds both her father Adron e'Kieron and her cousin Morrolan e'Drien as personal heroes.

[edit] History

Aliera e'Kieron was born approximately five hundred years before the Interregnum.

We know little of her early childhood or education, except that it included training in the arts of Elder Sorcery, in addition to fostering a deep respect in her for her father, Adron e'Kieron. Presumably, she was raised at Redface, in the duchy of Eastmanswatch, her father's demense, but this is not certain.

By her five hundredth year, she was a strikingly beautiful figure, with trademark e'Kieron blond hair, unusual for a Dragonlord.

Her arrival at court in the last days of the reign of Tortaalik did not help the impending crisis, and disrupted the court, especially the attention of prime minister Jurabin and the consort Noima. A jealous Noima pressured Tortaalik into searching Aliera's guest room for items of pre-empire sorcery. This insult forced her and Adron to demand apologies from the empire, and Tortaalik's refusal led to both of them declaring themselves rebels. Aliera was arrested by Khaavren for assisting the escape of Mario after his first unsuccessful attempt at regicide.

It was during this escape that she and Mario apparently first expressed a romantic interest in one another.

Aliera was in the company of the Emperor later when Mario was finally successful in his second assassination attempt. It was only due to the timely intervention of Sethra Lavode and her outstanding abilities with teleportation that saved Aliera from destruction during Adron's Disaster, though her soul was wrenched from her physical body during the process.

She spent the Interregnum as a disembodied soul, thanks to this inadequate rescue, although it should be noted that Sethra was also busy with other matters at the time.

Aliera's soul was found in a field by Orlaan, who put her in a staff and later traded it for certain services from an Athyra sorcerer named Loraan.

In the book Taltos, Sethra Lavode and Morrolan e'Drien, Aliera's cousin (on her father's side), discovered her whereabouts and enlisted the aid of Vlad Taltos to recover the staff from Loraan, as Loraan's magical defenses ignored Easterners. The other desirable feature of Vlad's Easternness was that he could take the staff to the Paths of the Dead to resurrect Aliera, possibly without becoming trapped there as a Dragaeran would. The plan succeeds though not without serious complication, and Verra herself regenerates Aliera's body and reunites it with her soul, and allows her to leave the Paths. Before leaving the Paths, Aliera meets her ancestor, Kieron the Conqueror, and takes his sword out with her.

One of Morrolan's reasons for wishing to rescue Aliera was that she had a better claim to the title of Dragon Heir than he, and he would rather be Warlord than emperor. Aliera felt likewise and, shortly after being confirmed by the Dragon Council as Heir, started seeking out a more qualified candidate. In Yendi, she found Norathar e'Lanya, who had been falsely accused of bastardy and thus disqualified as a baby, and helped her be reinstated.

Shortly after this, as described in Dragon, Aliera traded Kieron's Greatsword for the Great Weapon Pathfinder.

Aliera later participated in the assassination of a particularly nasty and manipulative Jhereg named Mellar. This was accomplished, in part, by allowing Mellar to kill her with a pair of morganti daggers. Her soul was saved only due to the fact that she carried Pathfinder, which protected her.

When Vlad was imprisoned on Greenaere, Aliera was among the party that went to rescue him, using her skills with Pre-Empire Sorcery to effect his escape. Later, she also helped Vlad broker a truce with the king of Greenaere to end the War of 243.

A few years after this, Aliera was abducted (along with her cousin Morrolan) by the Jenoine, during their attempt to tap amorphia from the Lesser Sea of Chaos. With the help of Vlad and her mother Verra, they escaped from the prison of the Jenoine, and then aided the gods in foiling their plans to steal amorphia.

[edit] Current Events

Aliera currently resides in Castle Black (her cousin Morrolan's demesne) with her cat, and the occasional Jhereg lover sneaking in.

Aliera recently became marginally involved in enlisting the help of Vlad to aid Cawti her attempts to drive the Left Hand of the Jhereg out of South Adrilankha, although she would likely never admit to this.

[edit] Additional Notes

Aliera is the reincarnation of one of the founders of the empire, whose brothers were Kieron and Dolivar, who has been reincarnated as Vlad Taltos. She has undergone regression with Sethra Lavode to recall her past life.

Unbeknownst to Aliera, she will, in the future, be the mother of a girl named Devera.

Her title, announced in Five Hundred Years After, is "Countess of Limterak", although it is not mentioned in Vlad's time if she still holds this title.
