Instruments and their likely 'real world' equivalent:

  • reed-pipes - oboes, clarinets, and bassoons
  • chanter-pipes - bagpipes ("the delicate, steady pulsing of each breath")
  • wood-pipes - flutes, piccolos, etc
  • brass-pipes - trumpets, trombones, tubas, other horns
  • polychords - stringed instruments, probably including violins, violas, cellos and double basses
  • idiophones (clappers, knockers, and cymbals) - percussion instruments
  • membranophones - drums, in particular timpani
  • organophone - most likely a keyboard instrument, though whether a piano, harpsichord, or organ is not clear.
