The name "Loiosh" is a mutated pronunciation of the common Hungarian name Lajos, which is currently pronounced closer to "Laiosh".

If someone wants to challenge me on the above, feel free to ask Steve Brust. I've already checked it with him and he agrees.

Oh, no arguments. I went hunting for some Hungarian sound files at one point, and found one that had someone speaking the name "Lajos". What I heard does match the above. So that's another data point.
