Daifan, usually referred to as "the Demon", was the second highest member of the Jhereg Council (after Curithne) for many years. He achieved this status during the Interregnum when he killed off two of the three council members who managed to escape Adron's Disaster (presumably, Curithne was the lone exception). Before this he was completely unknown.

He was instrumental in building the Jhereg organization up again during and after the Interregnum. It was his idea to allow Easterners to buy titles in the Jhereg.

The Demon was the Jhereg who commissioned Vlad Taltos to kill Mellar when he had gone into hiding at Castle Black. While he was most appreciative of Vlad's efforts at the time, that did not prevent him (along with the rest of the Organization) from trying to kill Vlad after his assault on Count Soffta, and subsequent betrayal of Boralinoi to the Empire.

[edit] Current Events

Since the death of Curithne, the Demon has found himself vying for position with the other council members to accede to the leadership position. In this endeavor, he found an uncomfortable ally in Vlad, who arranged for the leaders of the Left Hand of the Jhereg to withdraw their support from one of the Demon's rivals, and cease their operations in South Adrilankha in exchange for their lives.
